Conor McGregor’s boxing coach doesn’t just think the Irishman will become the first man to beat Floyd Mayweather – he thinks he’ll become the first man to knock him out, too.

The two-weight UFC world champion is the heavy underdog in his professional boxing debut, with the majority of bookmakers offering odds as long as 7/1 on his winning the fight.

Mayweather is the overwhelming favourite, and with good reason. The American boasts a flawless 49-0 professional record and has never visited the canvas in his illustrious 21-year career.

Conor McGregor has ramped up his training regime as his multi-million dollar ‘Fight of the Century’ against Floyd Mayweather edges closer.

The Irishman, who is preparing for the August 26 fight in his own personal gym in Dublin, posted a picture of himself in full sparring gear – including head and groin guard – along with the caption “Gloving up.”

McGregor, who is taking part in a professional boxing match for the first time in his fight career, has regularly posted updates on his training preparations for the Las Vegas bout.

McGregor’s boxing coach, Owen Roddy, is confident that his man has acquired the necessary skills to defeat Mayweather on August 26.

Conor McGregor will face boxing legend Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather on August 26 in one of the biggest fights in combat sports history.

Unbeaten Mayweather, now 40 years old, took to Twitter to make the announcement, confirming the bout will take place in Las Vegas with the message: “It’s official.”

Mixed martial arts’ McGregor, 28, has never competed in a professional boxing match, sparking criticism over the credibility of the fight.

It’s certainly got plenty talking, and a host of North East fighters have had their say on the controversial bout.

North East MMA legend Colin ‘Freakshow’ Fletcher said: “It’s very interesting and fun to be fair.

“Conor wouldn’t do it if he didn’t think, and he 100-percent believes that he can win,” Roddy told The MMA Hour podcast. “We believe he’s going to win. If anybody can go in and do the extraordinary – on paper, it’s a tall task.

“If anybody can do it, Conor can. He shocks the world every time he fights. They’ve always doubted him.

Another fighter on that card is highly touted South Shields prospect Joe Millward, he also had his say on McGregor vs. Mayweather.

“I hope Conor bursts him, simple,” Millward said.

“It will only increase MMA popularity and revenue for our future as fighters, and shows we can do their sport but they couldn’t possibly do ours.”

Mixed martial arts’ progression over the last twenty years has been staggering, with many people thinking this announcement is validation of the rise in popularity of the sport as a whole.

“I believe he’s going to go in there and do it. He believes that he’s going to go in there and do it. The whole team believes that he’s going to do it.

McGregor and Mayweather will both take part in a global publicity tour to promote the fight starting with an event at Wembley Stadium later this month.

Both fighters are predicted to earn up to $100m from the bout, making it potentially the most lucrative fight in boxing history.

Despite the growing hype a number of prominent boxing personalities have expressed their scepticism over the fight.

A recent video splicing together McGregor and Mayweather’s contrasting boxing skills side by side raised concerns the Irishman has a long way to go before he is ready to challenge the unbeaten fighter

The ‘Fight of the Century’ will see UFC icon McGregor take to the boxing ring the first time for a fight that could net both fighters as much as $100m each.

Appetite for the fight on social media is growing by the day but there is huge scepticism on how competitive the fight will prove to be.

With just under two months to go until fight night, McGregor and Mayweather have both posted videos of their workouts – and the difference between the two is alarmi

Sunderland fighter Cal ‘Pacino’ Ellenor is another of the region’s up and coming MMA fighters but he feels it may be a tough night for McGregor: “I think it’s entertaining but I think what a lot of people don’t understand is, there are levels to boxing, just as there are in any sport.

“McGregor has zero professional boxing experience and only a small amount of amateur boxing experience.

“Sure McGregor has range and is a southpaw but it’s all about positions, people don’t think about this kind of thing.McGregor Live Online Boxing

“You’re talking about arguably the best boxer of all time fighting a guy with 0-0 professional boxing record. In a fight anything can happen, of course, but I genuinely don’t see any other result than Floyd winning the fight
